Fight against tropical diseases: The exploitation of two Malian scientific heroescelebrated
The US Embassy to Mali celebrated the exploitation of two Malian scientific heroes in the fight against tropical diseases. It’s about Professors Abdoulaye Djimde and Mahamadou Diakite. During a ceremony the Thursday, December 9, 2021, Ambassador Hankins awarded Professor Djimde the Joseph Auguste LePrince of @ASTMH (American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene).
He congratulated Professor Diakite on his brilliant nomination as a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. These two Malians have revolutionized the field of medicine through their scientific achievements. Professor Djimdé is the first African and only the 24th person to receive the Joseph Auguste LePrince medal, the most prestigious award rewarding exceptional work against malaria since 1951. He worked closely with the National Institutes of Health in the United States. Its work is recognized by OMS for helping to make anti-malaria drugs more effective to save lives, especially children. He also frames the next generation of African scientists.
Professor Diakite, Vice-Chancellor of Bamako University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies (USTTB), has been appointed a member of ASTMH, in recognition of his supported work on malaria and other tropical infectious diseases agents. The solid collaboration between USTTB and the US National Institutes of Health has favoured its research, making it the only African among the 28 new ASTMH scholarships nominated in 2021. His work helps the world to better understand how malaria is transmitted, human immune responses to malaria, and the genetic diversity of malaria parasites. His research topics are essential to eliminate malaria in Mali and eradicate it from the world.
