The Vaxzevria vaccine against COVID 19 launched in Mali: “We are confident and very sure”, said Professor Seydou Doumbia

In Mali, the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus disease started this Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at the Point G Hospital, in the presence of the head of government Moctar Ouane and the Minister of Health. The social and health staff is the priority target.

The first dose was administered to Minister of Health and Social Development Doctor Fanta Siby. Thus, Mali is launching its vaccination campaign against covid-19 almost a year, after the appearance of the first cases in the country. The social and health staff, on the front line in the response against the virus, ” that’s a given insurance “, says Amadou Dia, doctor.

The COVID-19 center in the Point G Hospital which was designated to launch the vaccination campaign recorded nearly 2,000 patients, including several deaths. The start of the vaccination is therefore a real relief. “The vaccine remains the only solution to prevent the disease,” says Prof. Yacouba Toloba, the center manager. On the technical level, UNICEF “remains available” to support the government because, according to its representative, “the vaccine provides collective immunity. “

The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine now called Vaxzevria, suspended in several European countries, is the one in use. But “it is very reassuring”, according to the Malian health authorities. “We are confident and very sure”, specifies Professor Seydou Doumbia, who chairs the Covid scientific committee.

Currently, Mali has more than 300,000 doses of vaccine obtained a month ago as part of the COVAX initiative. At the end of February, the country also announced that it had placed the order for more than eight million doses. Health workers, people over 60 and those living with co-morbidities are priority targets. But that does not exclude the rest of the population.
