Prof. Seydou DOUMBIA at the training workshop on mentoring: “Be masters of your choices, and assume these choices…»

Bamako, the capital city of Mali hosted from December 19 to 21, 2022, the training of trainers’ workshop on mentoring. Organized by the University Clinical Research Center (UCRC) of the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB), and Johns Hopkins University (USA),  this scientific activity is part of the ” Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Training Program (Mali-Guinea-EID-RTP/ Grant D43), funded by the National Institutes of Health of the United States of America (NIH/NIAID).

All scientific works need professional and administrative support for a better organization of activities, said Prof. Seydou DOUMBIA, the Program PI/Mali.  “Dear mentees, this mentoring exercise is particularly intended for you, because it helps you to better formulate your objectives and structure your capacities for achievement. Thus, you can succeed in your careers. I urge you to be in control of your choices, and to assume those choices. It is not just about being a teacher, but having the knowledge to be able to better transfer your skills.”, he added.

About sixty participants, made up of senior and junior researchers, were brought together to strengthen the capacities of diagnosis, monitoring and career development of young researchers in a decentralized manner. “This workshop allowed us to take stock of the current unfolding of the roles of mentors and mentees. It allowed us to identify our strengths and weaknesses, and what will allow us to improve our ways of doing things in the future. I was impressed by everyone’s active participation. I think that by integrating our strong points and improving our weak points, the mentor-mentee relationship will be improved for the well-being of the researchers that we are and our training institutions.”, recognized Prof. Abdoul Habib BEAVOGUI, the Program Co-PI /Guinea.

For a good coordination of any human activity, there must be required standards. Thus, a mentorship based on respect and mutual understanding is essential for personal and professional development. According to the mentor, Prof Yacouba SISSOKO from Mali, before, mentoring was perceived as an activity of moods, without taking into account the required standards that we were unaware of. “This workshop comes at the right time because it helps us to put our research activities in order. Beyond the theory, the practices carried out will be very useful in our daily activities”, he testified. For the mentee Maladho DIABY-from Guinea, may this activity continue for better coordination of research activities in the universities of our two countries.

At a time of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, health emergencies are forcing scientific researchers from all sides, to pool efforts to face the common enemy that threatens the survival of all of humanity. “This mentoring exercise is so important that we are going to integrate it into the doctoral program at our University. In addition, such sessions will be organized for teachers and students, in each institution of the USTTB. We also intend to pool our efforts to strengthen this dynamic of integration with the Republic of Guinea, in order to raise the level of training and research. To do this, we are going to set up a pool of trainers.”, conclude the Vice-Rctor of the USTTB, Prof Mamahadou DIAKITE.
